Tips for Adopting Persian Kittens

Persian kittens are sweet, beautiful animals that are rapidly growing in popularity as pets.  This is due in part to their friendly, personable attitudes, as well as their silky soft hair that makes them such pretty creatures.  They are also known as “Persian Longhair,” or, if they do not have the necessary pedigree papers, “Domestic Longhair.”  They are one of the oldest cat breeds, but have only recently taken on their now common name.  They make wonderful companions and, for the most part, are very easy to care for.  There are, however, certain things that you need to keep in mind when you adopt a Persian kitten.

Coloring
When most people think of Persian kittens, they think of the beautiful white fur most commonly seen on television in movies.  The truth is that they come in all sorts of colors, from silver to gold to grey to multicolored.  Do not get hung up on their coloring.

Environment
The long hair of the Persian kitten means that there is that much more hair that can be matted, dirtied, damaged, snagged, or can take on all manner of leaves and sticks and such.  For this reason, it should probably be kept as an indoor only cat if you do not want to spend a great deal of time tending to additional grooming.

Grooming
The long hair, despite its beauty, poses a distinct problem for cat owners.  They shed a great deal and will need to be brushed daily with a long metal comb to help pull away loose hair before it is shed away.  Doing so will also help cut down on the number of hairballs your kitten will suffer as a result of its own grooming.  Due to the length of the hair, an occasional bath would also be a good idea.

Personality
The Persian cat is a very gentle, friendly animal that does well in most households.  They do, however, require a great deal of attention and should not be left alone for extended periods of time.  Persian kittens are very vocal and very expressive of their needs and feelings.  They are very loving and adore constant attention and stroking.  If you live alone and have to go to work every day, it is best to have a second cat to keep your Persian company.

Health
Like any newborn kittens, they should receive all necessary shots and should make an annual visit to the veterinarian to ensure that they remain in optimum health.  Their eyes, however, since they are larger than other breeds, should be checked periodically to ensure that they do not develop problems as they age.

As you can see, there are many benefits to adopting a Persian kitten into your home.  They are sweet, loving pets that can provide you many years of love and companionship.  As long as you tend to their particular needs and care properly for them, you will have many happy years together.
