When someone begins the process of adopting new born kittens, he will usually go down to the animal shelter or look through the classifieds section of the newspaper before looking into any of the available alternatives. Most people have at least one or two local breeders, but when it’s not a show cat you are looking for, it becomes very difficult to justify the expense. One other option that many people may not consider is the kitten rescue society or their local animal rescue group.
Kitten rescue groups operate in a manner that is very similar to the local animal shelter, only they go a step further in what they do. Many animals that are taken to these groups are in very poor health, have been abandoned or abused, or have been their own long enough to become feral. In many of these cases, there is not much that the animal shelter can do for them, so they end up being euthanized.
In contrast, kitten rescue groups take in all animals that are brought into them. They are made up by groups of volunteers who dedicate their time and money to giving a second chance to animals that otherwise would not be able to survive on their own. They work closely with veterinarians to get these animals the best possible care and to ensure that their health is well cared for while they are waiting for adoption.
Since they frequently suffer from psychological and physical hurt, many rescue kittens are individually fostered by group members to ensure that they get the individual care and attention they need. While this certainly includes tending to their injuries and nursing them back to health, care is also taken to help socialize the kitten so that it can enter into any family and not have to worry about further abuse or abandonment. Some of these poor creatures need quite a bit of care and attention before they are able to trust humans again.
While there is certainly nothing wrong with looking through the classifieds or going to the animal shelter when you are adopting a kitten, but make sure to take a little time to visit the local kitten rescue center. You may just find that perfect little friend waiting for you there.
