When you are weaning newborn kittens off their mother’s milk, it can be difficult. They are not at all inclined to stop nursing, and usually show very little interest in canned food. Dry cat food will be much too hard on their developing teeth, so the best solution is to create a homemade kitten food that is very similar to their mother’s milk, but different enough that you can use it to steadily wean them away from her. This recipe is very easily to make and yummy for kitten bellies.
You will need:
| 1 Package | Unflavored Gelatin |
| 1 1/2 Cups | Water |
| 1 12 oz Can | Goat’s Milk |
| 3 Tbsp | Full Fat Yogurt |
| 3 Tbsp | Real Mayonnaise |
| 3 Tsp | Light Corn Syrup |
| 1 | Raw Egg Yolk |
There are a few concerns that you will want to address before you begin:
1.) If your tap water does not taste good, pass it through an activated charcoal filter before using it.
2.) Do not substitute cow’s milk for goat’s milk under any circumstances. Many cats are lactose intolerant, and cannot consume cow’s milk without becoming sick.
3.) Raw eggs carry the risk of salmonella poisoning. To eliminate the risk of infection, use eggs that have been pasteurized in the shell.
The Procedure
Begin by bringing the water to a boil by itself, then remove it from the heat and stir in the gelatin until it is thoroughly dissolved. Do not boil the gelatin.
Pour your gelatin mixture into a blender along with half of the milk, then pulse on low until it is combined. It will only take a few seconds.
Add each of the remaining ingredients to the blender, one at a time. After each addition, pulse briefly to fully incorporate the new ingredient before moving on to the next. Be sure to keep the speed very low so as to not completely liquefy your homemade kitten food.
You can serve your now completed homemade kitten food as it is, or you can store it in the refrigerator for later. You can even mix it into canned food to help wean the kittens off their mother’s milk. If you choose to store it for later use, cover it tightly and store in your refrigerator for up to ten days.
Before serving, be sure to warm up your homemade kitten food. Newborn kittens are used to their food being warm, and cold kitten food can upset kitten bellies.
